Fixed orthodontic appliances: Braces
Even if they are not the most aesthetic option, traditional braces are the gold standard andthe most widely used orthodontic system. They are a trusted and foolproof technique for straightening your child’s teeth, correcting dental bite issues and resolving malocclusion.
Brackets consist of small metal attachments that are being meticulously bonded to the front of each tooth and connected by an archwire- fitting in the bracket slot – in order to guide movement. This wire exerts constant, gentle pressure to move teeth into their correct positions.
Nowadays’s braces are sleeker and smoother than ever, and adults can opt for ceramic clear brackets if they look for a more discreet appearance .
Braces are cost-effective for correcting most orthodontic issues, even complex ones :
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Occlusal bite issues (overbite, open bite, or crossbite)
- Dental arches and jaw discrepancies
Traditional braces are a highly effective way to straighten teeth and correct bite issues at any age. Adults often choose traditional braces for their reliability and ability to address even complex orthodontic problems.
Clear brackets offer a discreet look and comprehensive orthodontic system. Those translucent, stain-resistant ceramic braces will slowly and gently shift your teeth into a proper and better alignment over time. They have a smoother contour for more comfort and they can also be self-ligating ( elastic-free) reducing friction and enhancing effectiveness.
Cooperation and regular visits are requided to activate wires and braces.
Braces require regular check-ups for adjustments every 5-6 weeks and may take 12-36 months ( depending on the type of malformations and dysfunctions to correct ) in order to achieve a splendid aligned and functional smile. The orthodontic will determine the exact schedule after each regular examination.
Braces not only boost your appearance and self confidence but also help to maintain long -term oral health , by making teeth easier to clean and reducing the risks of possible dental problems over time.
VERY IMPORTANT : Foods and beverages to best avoided as they may stain or weaken the enamel: sugary/ acid drinks and avoid eating sticky ( gum, chocolate ) and hard foods (nuts , ice, baguette ..) as they make cleaning more challenging and may damage wires or brackets ( dislodging bracket or breaking and tilting wires ).
- To prevent food stuck, white spots on the enamel, gum inflammation/bleeding , bad breath, teeth discoloration and decay, your brackets should be cleaned daily with fluoride toothpaste and an appropriate toothbrush - preferably, electrical with small soft head manual – and interdental brushes to reach the most difficult areas. Those tiny brushes are highly effective in cleaning spaces around and between brackets and wires ( underneath the wire). They exist in all different shapes and diameters so choose the one that best fits the space between your teeth (usually 3-4mm).
- Add to your hygiene routine the use of antibacterial mouth rinse to eliminate oral bacteria and plaque buildup . Fluoride-contained mouthwashes are recommended to strengthen enamel and prevent possible white spots and bacteria buildup around the brackets. Be mindful with chlorexidine-contained mouthwashes as they potentially can lead to discolor teeth fillings and surfaces around brackets after long term use.
- Water floss irrigators can be very helpful in effecting cleaning gums and removing any stuck food particleswithout dislodging brackets. Thus, they are highly recommended as a complement to other cleaning methods .
Brushing correctly is one of the most essential measure for both maintaining optimal oral and general health and caring fixed braces. The most efficient brushing technique will be explained by both the orthodontist and dental assistant the day you start your treatment. At each appointment, the orthodontist may give you personalized advice to improve your oral hygiene routine and can do a cleaning to removed hardened plaque and tartare if necessary.
1. Is my kid ready for braces?
Most children do not need braces right away. We highly recommend planning your little one’s first orthodontic visit at age 7 even thought it’s just being an observational period. The orthodontist will first monitor your child’s dental and facial development and inform you when it’s adequate time for any treatment. She will also make sure everything is progressing normally.
2. Does braces hurt?
Expect mild pressure or tenderness after fixing or adjusting the wire in the mouth. Eating may be difficult for the first two- three days on average ( depending on each patient) after the installation of your brackets. Soft food is recommended during that period.
Please note that treatment with aligners is designed to be gentler.
3. Emergency during your orthodontic treatment?
If something doesn’t feel right with your brackets , do not stress or panic!
As a patient of our clinic , we always have your back. Indeed, the team will ensure to provide adequate support, assistance, and prompt care for unexpected orthodontic issues.
You should book a visit if you experienced for example any of this following issues:
- Feeling that a brace is becoming loose or partially detached and your next appointment is planned in more than 3 weeks ( usually not painful)
- Broken or bend wire that irritate the tongue, cheek or gums ( You can try first to cover it with orthodontic wax or try to hold he wire with a tweezer and cut the poking edge of the wire with a toes nail clipper )
- Persistant pain , discomfort or very unusual sensitivity around teeth ( take pain reliever if needed)
4. Can I still go to the dentist with braces?
It is higly recommended to keep a regular check up visit with your dentist or dental hygienist once to twice a year for deeper teeth cleaning and oral examination.
