Orthodontic mini-implants
Temporary Anchorage Devices ( TADs)

Revolution in orthodontic treatment: TADs offer precise , more predictible and faster tooth movement.

TADs are very small, screw-like dental implants made of a titanium alloy which act as a stable anchor point in your jaw around which teeth can move. Thus, they enable tooth movements to be feasible, more controlled and precise during some orthodontic treatments.

Unlike, dental implants, they do not become integrate with the bone itself. They are fixed mechanically to the jaw. Plus, they usually remain in place during few months of treatment, and afterwards, easily removed when treatment is complete. Those mini-implants are frequently placed between the roots of teeth, but may also be sited on the palate or other jawbones sites.

TADs offer a wide range of solutions for complex orthodontic cases especially when traditional anchorage systems are insufficient.

They are particularly indicated in multiple clinical scenarios:

    • Guarantee maximum anchorage during massive retraction, ideal for non-compliant patients with elastics.
    • Aid in extremely difficult teeth movements that may not be achievable with conventional techniques.
    • Correction severe deep bites, closing spaces after teeth extractions, and tilted occlusal planes.
    • Solving midline asymmetry or occlusal inclination.
    • Great help in the surgical traction/pull of alignment of impacted canines, as well as in the upright positioning and extrusion of impacted molars.
    • Aid in molar intrusion and support the distalization of maxillary molars and mandibular teeth.

Not every orthodontic treatment requires mini-implants. However, for those who do, it's a treatment option that offers some clear benefits.

  • Increased control and precision of teeth adjustments to guarantee wanted functional and aesthetic outcomes, as a result of the extremely stable anchorage provided by TADs .
  • Shortening the overall treatment length as TADs allow faster dental movements, significantly shortening the overall duration of treatment.
  • Predictability of outcomes with TADs : optimizing treatment plans and promoting patient satisfaction and confidence on the orthodontic care.

It does not exist strict contraindications for the use of TADs , but usually they are not advised for patients suffering from mental health disorders, severe systemic conditions ( osteoporosis, blood-related conditions) and the ones presenting poor bone quality or non-controlled diabetes .

Placing or removing TADs is a minimally-invasive, pain-free procedure. The orthodontist will inject a local anesthetic to numb the gums and surrounding areas where the TAD required to be placed. You may experience an odd pressure sensation as the TADs is being implanted .

Once the numbness goes away, you may feel some discomfort, little soreness and small wound within the first 24 hours and approximately half of the patients report taking simple painkillers (paracetamol) to fix this. TADs are also very easily removed when no longer needed, by unwinding them, usually with the need for little anaesthesic.

The overall procedure is very quick as it just take few minutes to complete ( average 10- 15 minutes per TADs) .

 IMPORTANT !

While they're implanted, TADS require minimal maintenance but as like all things, you should keep good oral hygiene and cleaning to avoid complications ( such as TADs loss , peri-implantitis ).

Typically, you should clean your teeth and brushed twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in an antimicrobial solution ( chlorexidine).

No worries, we will give you all the specific instructions regarding maintenance after your TADS are placed

TADs are extremely safe technique. Studies indicate that there is NO risk of tooth damage, loss , decay , or sensitivity with the use of TADs.

The vast majority of mini-implants remain stable during brace treatment and cause little nuisance. However, few of them can become loose, usually within the first few months. If this happens, then it’s rarely painful and later on, it can be replaced if necessary.
